Hiring tradespeople in Ireland: what's different
Our main hiring guide covers the universal steps. In Ireland, a few statutory registers matter most, and consumer protection is overseen nationally.
Gas work: Registered Gas Installers
By law, gas installation work in Ireland must be carried out by a Registered Gas Installer (RGI). The register is run by the Register of Gas Installers of Ireland (RGII) on behalf of the regulator. Search the register online and ask the installer for their ID card. After work is completed, a registered installer should give you a certificate.
Electrical work: Safe Electric
Electrical contractors should be registered with Safe Electric, the scheme run on behalf of the regulator. Registered Electrical Contractors issue a completion certificate for most electrical work; ESB Networks will generally require one before connecting or reconnecting supply after certain work. Check the Safe Electric register before you hire.
Builders: CIRI and building control
The Construction Industry Register Ireland (CIRI) lists builders and contractors who meet competence and compliance standards. For larger works, building control rules may require a commencement notice to the local building control authority, with an assigned certifier and builder. Ask your builder which notices are needed and who will lodge them.
Check the business and tax
Search the Companies Registration Office (CRO) for registered companies. Ask whether the price includes VAT. Pay by traceable means against an invoice.
Your rights
Under Irish consumer law, services must be supplied with reasonable care and skill. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) explains your rights and how to complain. For contracts signed away from the trader's premises, EU-based rules usually give you a 14-day cancellation period.
The Small Claims procedure, run by the District Court, handles consumer claims up to €2,000 for a small fee.
Getting help
- CCPC consumer helpline and website.
- Small Claims for modest claims.
- An Garda Síochána for fraud.
- The relevant register (RGII, Safe Electric, CIRI) for complaints about registered contractors.
